The Egg Chair by Arne Jacobsen

With the recent comeback of the mid-century design style, you’re sure to have seen this 50’s icon in a style magazine, furniture showroom, or even scrolling past your screen on your Pinterest feed. The Egg Chair is a mid-century staple that mixes both modern sleekness and curves with comfort and functionality to create a classic look in any retro-inspired space. The history behind this piece and how it came to be even further establishes this chair as the icon that it is today.

Arne Jacobsen, a danish architect and designer, is the creative behind this 1950’s furniture piece. His design expertise and attention to detail awarded him the title of lead architect for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. Because of his unique work and particular style, Jacobsen decided to design every architectural feature of this hotel himself. From the exterior facade of the building down to the chairs that would dress the front lobby, he made sure to have a hand in everything along the way. He set out to create a chair that acted as a retreat of comfort and solitude in such a hectic, public setting as a hotel reception area. The curved arms and back of his design provided just that. Thus, the Egg Chair was born.

Since its inception in 1958, the Egg Chair has been one of the most recognizable pieces  of mid-century furniture to date. With its minimalist curves and organic shape, the chair has been implemented in interiors of all styles for decades. If you are looking for a bold eye-catcher to add something fun to your own space, think about adding a funky fabric or a pattered pillow to make the piece feel more personal. The Egg Chair is certainly a statement that can make your room a space to be remembered for the ages.
