Add Style to Your Neutral Living Room

Are you ready to enliven your neutral living space, but aren’t sure how to go from simple and cozy to fresh and exciting?  There are many options for contributing your personal style to a neutral space - and not all of them include color! Here are a few suggestions to get your creative ideas flowing.

All that glitters

If you are new to the idea of decorating with bold colors and vivid patterns, there is a shiny solution that could add a level of glamour and sophistication to your space! Try incorporating metal objects - silver, gold, bronze, brass - or glass whatever suits your fancy into your space. A unique sculptural ball could be the perfect addition to your built-in shelves. Or perhaps a blown glass vase compliments your entourage perfectly! Trays are an option that can combine both glass and metal for a refined and functional piece to center your coffee table.  Any of these choices can become a new focal point or conversational piece in your home while showing off your knack for accessorizing with style.

“Often, people find it comforting to be surrounded by neutrals. Layering in texture, colors found in nature, simple shapes and metal finishes can elevate a standard neutral palette to create a more modern, neutral space.”

Rugs are a fantastic way to complete any space in your home.  With an abundance of materials, colors, and patterns to choose from, there is no limit to the possibilities for showing your personality through a rug. A hand-woven, geometric Moroccan rug is cozy and warm.  An oriental silk rug is luxurious and extroverted with its many colors and intricate detailing. Jute and sisal rugs now come in a variety of weave textures and colors while communicating a casual tone. Add contrast with a black and white option, or go bold with color saturated patterns. No matter your personal style there is a rug for every occasion, room, and budget.

Throw in some color

Ever wonder why adults have so many pillows on their bed? Because they’re comfortable and stylish! Throw pillows and blankets are the perfect homey addition to any space. Use these soft goods as an opportunity to introduce pops of color into your otherwise monochromatic interior. Stick to one or two to keep things coherent, but feel free to experiment with any combination of patterns and textures - a Yellow Bungalow trademark! If the idea of selecting colors and patterns on your own is daunting, try sticking to families: jewel tones, pastels, blues and greens, geometric patterns… and so on. Or, if you fall in love with a pattern that doesn’t play as well with others, try selecting one of the colors from within the pattern, and incorporating doses of it throughout your space. Textures can enrich a space without needing color! A fluffy throw or a knit ottoman can add interest simply because it is texturally different.

Bring the gallery home

No matter what accents you choose to incorporate, your home can only become a greater expression of yourself. Utilize a variety of frame and matte sizes. Create groupings of images and wall decor. An asymmetrical arrangement can lend itself to both traditional and contemporary interiors. Symmetrical arrangements create emphasis and keep things crisp. Make it modern, or classic; let it be bold.
Display your travels and your passions or highlight your favorite color. Most of all, highlight your personality. After all, that is what design is all about!

Yes you can! Mix traditional oil paintings with contemporary art prints. Find a common color scheme, unify the pieces with frames that compliment one another, and display them on you wall. (Source: Dabito via Front + Main)
